Our Suppliers' Sustainable Practices

Parliamentary Services at New Zealand Parliament

The New Zealand Parliament has been actively working towards integrating sustainable practices across its operations, demonstrating a strong commitment to environmental stewardship and energy efficiency. Through a series of strategic initiatives, Parliamentary Services is making significant strides in reducing its carbon footprint and promoting sustainability. Here are some of the key projects and measures being undertaken:

LED Lighting
One of the notable efforts has been the upgrade of lighting systems to energy-efficient LED lighting. This transition not only reduces energy consumption but also lowers maintenance costs and improves the overall lighting quality within the Parliament buildings. LEDs are known for their longevity and efficiency, making them an ideal choice for sustainable lighting solutions.

Solar Photovoltaic System Project
In a bid to harness renewable energy, a solar photovoltaic (PV) system project has been completed in the beginning of 2023. The installation of 560 solar panels enabled generation of clean, renewable energy for the Parliament precinct. By utilizing solar power, the Parliament can significantly reduce its reliance on non-renewable energy sources, thereby cutting down on greenhouse gas emissions and promoting a sustainable energy future.

Green Star Project
The Green Star project is another cornerstone of the Parliament's sustainability efforts. This project involves adhering to the Green Star rating system, which evaluates the environmental impact of buildings. By achieving Green Star certification, the Parliament ensures that its buildings meet high standards of sustainability, encompassing aspects such as energy and water efficiency, indoor environment quality, and sustainable materials use.

Electric Vehicle Chargers
Recognizing the importance of supporting sustainable transportation, Parliamentary Services has installed 20 electric vehicle (EV) chargers in the Parliament carpark. This initiative encourages the use of electric vehicles among staff and visitors, reducing the carbon emissions associated with traditional petrol and diesel vehicles. By providing the necessary infrastructure for EVs, the Parliament is promoting cleaner and greener transport options.

Alternative Transport Options
In addition to EV chargers, the Parliament is exploring and promoting alternative transport options. This includes initiatives to encourage cycling, walking, and the use of public transport. By offering and supporting these alternatives, the Parliament aims to reduce the reliance on single-occupancy vehicle trips, thereby decreasing traffic congestion and lowering overall emissions.

Sustainability Programme
The overarching framework for these initiatives is encapsulated in the Parliament's Sustainability Programme. This comprehensive programme implements sustainable initiatives across the precinct, ensuring that environmental considerations are integrated into all aspects of parliamentary operations. The programme covers a wide range of sustainability measures, from waste reduction and recycling to energy conservation and sustainable procurement practices.Through these concerted efforts, the New Zealand Parliament is setting an exemplary standard for sustainability in public institutions. By investing in energy-efficient technologies, renewable energy projects, and sustainable transport options, Parliamentary Services is not only reducing its environmental impact but also leading by example in the pursuit of a greener and more sustainable future.
